Black Lives Motion
Pastor Vincent Cox chaired the initial meeting in October 2020 between the Council Leader, Councillor Hazel Simmons, portfolio holders and a select group from the 'Better Together Network' (BTN) representing the black community. Alexzina Brooks (daughter of Rev Brooks) and Amara Lee-Thompson (now Nelson) NTCG Luton Youth Director, joined the meeting at Pastor Cox’s invitation as part of BTN's agenda for the development of young people/young adults.
The motion was passed unanimously at a full council meeting convened on 19th January 2021. NTCG Luton is delighted to be a part of this historic moment for the town and hopes that other civil authorities across the UK will follow suit.
The motion focuses on 10 key actions among which include the recognition of culturally historic dates, monitoring of the proportion of black staff within Luton Council, and working with Luton Airport on minimum representative employment aspirations. Also, the council would work with the Black community to promote access to employability, enterprise and training for young Black people. READ MORE
The Windrush Compensation Scheme Project
The African-Caribbean Community Development Forum has collaborated with NTCG Luton to run this project reaching out to the affected communities via a wide variety of platforms. They received support in the form of a reference from Luton Council.
The project is funded by the Home Office Voice 4 Change fund after the UK Government set up the Windrush Compensation Scheme to help those affected by the Windrush scandal get compensation for the impacts and losses they suffered.
“If you suffered because you couldn’t prove your legal right to live in the UK, you could be eligible for compensation. To check if you are eligible, click on the link.”
